ST. LOUIS — St. Louis’ communities are bracing for the region’s first major tornado chance of the year, forecast to hit Friday evening, according to 5 On Your Side’s Weather Impact meteorologists.
The storm system will be the area’s first true taste of spring’s severe weather. In 2024, storms throughout March, April, and May were a major reason why the area had its third-highest tornado year in history, with 42 twisters confirmed by year’s end.
Storms are expected to hit the region’s western communities at around 4 p.m., with the possibility of pop-up storms materializing ahead of the system. The highest storm risk for the area is between 7 and 8 p.m., with the most-eastern communities of the region getting hit around Midnight.
The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center highlighted the entire St. Louis region as the third-highest severe weather threat, an “enhanced” risk. The system is bringing strong winds blowing from various directions and a possible increased surge in moisture, both significant ingredients for severe weather.

“A very strong system will bring thunderstorms through the area Friday evening, several thunderstorms are expected to be severe,” 5 On Your Side Meteorologist Jim Castillo said. “Damaging winds will be the main hazard with any thunderstorm that develops. Lines of thunderstorms will be able to produce significant wind damage with gusts to 60-70 mph and tornadoes. Hail is the lesser threat.”
Ahead of the storm, residents are urged to make sure their cell phones are able to receive emergency alerts. Residents should head to their phone’s notification settings and turn on “Emergency Alerts” and “Public Safety Alerts” in the “Government Alerts” section.
“Secure outdoor objects that could be blown away,” Castillo said. “Have a plan to seek shelter immediately if a tornado warning is issued. Stay indoors during the storm and avoid driving if conditions worsen.”
