Brewers 3, Astros 0: Tobias Myers sharper, Christian Yelich homers

It’s back to interleague play for the Milwaukee Brewers as they host the Houston Astros for the first of a three-game series May 5.

Starting for the Brewers on the mound is Tobias Myers (0-0, 5.14) against Houston right-hander Ronel Blanco (2-2, 5.08).

Brewers strike first thanks to Yelich, Contreras

Some heads-up hustle from Joey Ortiz helped put the Brewers on the board in the third. Ortiz, with only two extra-base hits since April 3, legged out a hustle double on a bloop to left that escaped a diving Zach Dezenzo.

Ortiz then came around to score on William Contreras’ two-out single on a rope to left, opening the game’s scoring.

Christian Yelich came through one batter later with a two-run homer to right-center, his sixth of the year. The ball traveled 413 feet. It was a big swing for Yelich, who was 0 for his last 18 before a hit Sunday and also fought back from down 1-2 in the count to pound a curveball down in the zone from Ronel Blanco.

Better start this time for Tobias Myers

His last time out, Tobias Myers was pulled after two innings by manager Pat Murphy for what the skipper viewed as a lack of crispness and conviction despite only two runs allowed to the White Sox.

“You don’t walk the leadoff hitter,” Murphy said Wednesday in Chicago. “You got to be able to come out in the game with your changeup already ready. It was more of a message to Tobias than anything else.”

Message received.

Through five innings this time out, Myers hasn’t allowed a run while striking out one and giving up just three singles. He hasn’t had a single at-bat against him with a runner in scoring position.
