Stocks ended the final full week of March on a sour note, and a combination of sticky inflation and jitters over consumer health is getting much of the blame after a disappointing round of Friday data.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA finished with a loss of around 716 points, or 1.7%, according to preliminary data, after falling 767 points at its session low. The S&P 500 SPX shed 1.7%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP dropped 2.7%. The retreat erased weekly gains for all three major indexes, which remain on track for both March and first-quarter declines.
