Surprising Caitlin Clark News Draws Attention Ahead of UConn-South Carolina National Title

If the national championship showdown between Geno Auriemma’s Connecticut Huskies and Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks wasn’t enough excitement, the ESPN broadcast revealed some major news about former Iowa Hawkeyes superstar and current Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark.

Just under a year ago, Clark competed in the national championship against South Carolina. While the Hawkeyes fell short, Clark capped off one of the greatest collegiate careers of all time. On Sunday afternoon, she will make her presence felt once again for the big game—this time off the court.

Following UConn’s blowout win over UCLA, basketball legends Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, who host a simulcast covering the game on ESPN2, announced that Clark will join them for the national championship to break down the action live.

“Guys, we’re coming back on Sunday for the final, and we’ve got Caitlin Clark joining the show,” Bird revealed. “This will be Caitlin’s second time with us, so it’ll be great to have her back—this time as a pro. She was a college kid back then, so we’ve got to get professional Caitlin!”

Caitlin Clark was never able to capture a national title during her time at Iowa, but she came incredibly close and set countless records in pursuit of that goal. Not only is she the all-time leading scorer in Division I college basketball history—on both the men’s and women’s side—but her No. 22 Hawkeyes jersey was retired just a year after she left the university.

Now, as South Carolina looks to go back-to-back and capture their fourth title in eight years, Clark will be live on TV to dissect the national championship game as it happens. She’ll be joined by two all-time greats, both UConn alumni and former players coached by Geno Auriemma, who is aiming for his 12th national championship.
