The hugely popular Taylor Sheridan , the creator behind the neo-noir series Yellowstone, continues to find success thanks to Netflix . One of the writer’s more divisive projects, this time an action thriller, is now trending on the streamer’s charts, making its way into the top 3 on Netflix’s coveted top 10.
Released back in 2018, Sicario: Day of the Soldado sees Stefano Sollima take the reins of the crime thriller franchise, which was first launched by Sheridan and Dune director Denis Villeneuve with 2015’s Academy Award-nominated Sicario. Sicario: Day of the Soldado now stands at #3 on the Netflix charts in the U.S., just behind the comedy One of Them Days and the romantic drama The Life List, and just in front of Gerard Butler’s panned disaster movie Geostorm. No doubt it will continue to climb, as the action thriller only became available on the platform on April 1.
RelatedWhile its existence is somewhat baffling, Sicario: Day of the Soldado was a subversive sequel that honored the first film’s legacy.
Starring Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Jeffrey Donovan, and Raoul Trujillo, all of whom reprise their roles from the first outing, with Isabela Moner, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener joining the cast, Sicario: Day of the Soldado was met with a far more divisive reaction than its predecessor, and now holds scores of 62% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes alongside 68% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. You can check out the official synopsis for the crime thriller below.
“FBI agent Matt Graver calls on mysterious operative Alejandro Gillick when Mexican drug cartels start to smuggle terrorists across the U.S. border. The war escalates even further when Alejandro kidnaps a top kingpin’s daughter to deliberately increase the tensions. When the young girl is seen as collateral damage, the two men will determine her fate as they question everything that they are fighting for.”
Taylor Sheridan’s Action Thriller Series ‘Lioness’ Is Coming to Netflix
Fans of the Sicario series have been patiently waiting for an update on a possible third installment. Likely to be titled Sicario: Capos, MovieWeb recently spoke with the lead partners of Thunder Road Films, founder Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, with the latter revealing that they are currently “trying to figure out what that storyline is that merits a third movie.”
“I mean, we would love to make a third movie, and I think that the actors would like to come. I think we just have to figure out what the next chapter in that journey is. We’re talking about it a lot, thinking about it and discussing it. I love those movies. Those are so close to my heart. And I think it’s an amazing franchise. You know, Denis [Villeneuve] set the bar really high, and they and all of our actors have gone on to do such amazing things and stuff, and Taylor [Sheridan] has, like, the Taylor-verse, so I think we have to figure out what makes sense to get that band back together. I think the hope is to get all three actors back, in a perfect world.”
Speaking of Taylor Sheridan and Netflix, the writer, director, and producer’s underrated action series, Special Ops: Lioness, which stars MCU star and Oscar-winner Zoe Saldaña as a CIA agent tasked with enlisting female operatives, known as Lionesses, and prevent the next 9/11, is all set to land on the streamer in Australia, Canada, and Latin American regions from April 17th, 2025.
