Taylor Sheridan’s Polarizing Action Sequel Is Dominating Netflix 7 Years Later

2015’s Sicario is one of the most critically acclaimed action thrillers of the 2010s. However, its much more divisive sequel – Sicario: Day of the Soldado – is currently the one making waves on Netflix.

Penned by Taylor Sheridan (of Yellowstone fame) and directed by Stefano Sollima, Sicario: Day of the Soldado is #5 on Netflix’s Top 10 movies chart, courtesy of FlixPatrol. Other titles on the list include One of Them Days, Despicable Me 4, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, and Geostorm.

What Is Sicario: Day of the Soldado About?

Released in 2018, Sicario: Day of the Soldado sees the return of Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Jeffrey Donovan, and Raoul Trujillo, as the U.S. government instigates the Mexican cartel amid a human trafficking conflict. While the original movie received a 92% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, Day of the Soldado was received far less favorably, boasting a just-above-rotten 62%.

Though less subversive than its predecessor, Sicario: Day of the Soldado succeeds as a stylish, dynamic thriller — even if its amoral machismo makes for grim viewing. – Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus

While Sheridan wrote the script for Day of the Soldado, he’s perhaps best known for his expansive Yellowstone universe. The original series, starring Kevin Costner, recently came to a close with Season 5, but it’s spawned numerous spinoffs, including the prequel series 1883 and 1923, as well as the yet-to-debut The Madison, 1944, a Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler series, and a Kayce Dutton series.

1923 actor Jennifer Carpenter recently discussed Sheridan’s Yellowstone work, including why she believes the shows have found so much success. “I think that he’s reconnecting audiences to what it used to mean to tell stories on the viewer’s behalf,” Carpenter told Screen Rant. “Even when I was in acting conservatory at 18 years old, it was always about the audience, and it feels like that again. It’s not about A plus B equals C, and now we can drag all of our credits up the screen. He’s earning every minute of your time, and that says a lot too, because it takes a lot to leave your family and dedicate yourself to something wholeheartedly.”
