Texans legend J.J. Watt comments on Derek Stingley Jr.’s massive extension

Everyone in Houston is elated to see a new deal for All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., including the greatest defensive player in Texans’ history.

Three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt let his thoughts be known on Stingley’s new three-year, $90 million extension on X, formerly known as Twitter Monday morning, calling it “Good Business” with the lock emoji attached, something Stingley is known for in coverage.

If anyone knows good deals in Houston, it’s Watt. He was the anchor for the Texans under Gary Kubiak and later Bill O’Brien as the Texans won several division titles and multiple playoff games. When healthy, few could argue that Watt wasn’t the league’s top pass-rusher.

Much like Watt, Stingley is the league’s top cornerback when fully healthy. Last season, he played in all 17 games, earning the highest coverage grade by Pro Football Focus.

As the shutdown defender in a top-five secondary, Stingley finished sixth overall in interceptions (five), second in pass breakups (18) and allowed second-lowest completion percentage among cornerbacks with at least 200 coverage snaps (46.7%), according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

According to ESPN, four quarterbacks netted a passer rating under five when targeting Stingley against the Cowboys (3.5), Jacksonville Jaguars (0), Buffalo Bills (0) and Detroit Lions (0) during the 2024 season. He also picked off Justin Hebert in the wild-card round victory to help Houston advance to the divisional round for the second straight season.

That was a common theme for Watt to accomplish. Here’s hoping Stingley can do the same as the Texans look to finally reach the conference championship in 2025.
