Texas ‘likely’ to dismiss coach Rodney Terry after brutal March Madness ouster

Rodney Terry’s Texas tenure appears to be nearing its end.

The Longhorns are “likely” to remove the men’s basketball coach from his position, Jeff Goodman of Field of 68 reported Wednesday night.

The report comes as Texas lost a disappointing 86-80 First Four matchup to Xavier, failing to reach the Round of 64.

Terry took over as interim coach during the 2022-23 season after then-bench boss Chris Beard was arrested and subsequently fired.

After taking over that season, Texas went 22-8 and reached the Elite Eight.

Last year, they again reached the tournament but were bounced in a second-round loss.

This year, however, the program took a step back during its first year in the SEC.

Texas went into the conference tournament as the 13th seed and fell in the quarterfinals to eventual runner-up Tennessee.

Then, on Wednesday night in Dayton, things got off to a good start with Texas holding an eight-point first-half lead.

But the second half was a different story, and Xavier outscored the Longhorns 47-33 to clinch the final spot in the first round of the big dance.

When asked how he would react if this was his last game with the Longhorns, Terry said it’s all out of his hands now.

“At the end of the day, it’s in God’s hands. I live my life, I’m a believer. If God has plans for me to be here, I’ll be here,” he said, according to journalist Brian Davis.

The team’s 19 wins this year marked a low point for Terry’s run in Texas.

If Texas does indeed fire Terry, it would be another major program making a coaching change right after Indiana announced it hired former West Virginia coach Darian DeVries.
