The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Showrunners Promise “An Honest, Emotional, And Authentic” Ending For June Despite Upcoming Sequel Series

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 showrunners Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang promise an “authentic” end for June despite the upcoming sequel series. The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 will be the final installment of the show, ending its lengthy run after expanding the story of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name. However, it’s not the end of the franchise itself, with Atwood’s sequel novel, The Testaments, getting an adaptation for Hulu as well. The new show is already in the works, with multiple actors cast for key roles.

Speaking with ScreenRant, Tuchman and Chang promised that June (Elisabeth Moss) will get “an honest, emotional, and authentic” end to her story in The Handmiad’s Tale season 6. They explain how the final episodes of the series will resolve most of the established storylines, but that there will be a cliffhanger that leads into The Testaments adaptation. Even so, they appear to be satisfied with how the show wrapped up. Check out what Tuchman and Chang had to say about the final episodes below:

Eric Tuchman: I think fans should expect an honest, emotional, and authentic ending for June’s journey. If they’ve stuck with her from the beginning, I think they’ll be very understanding about where she ends up.

Yahlin Chang: We are able to resolve a lot of storylines. There’s still probably a very big cliffhanger that will get resolved in this sequel, but it was just such a blessing to be able to wrap up this amazing series. It was a privilege, really. I’m just thrilled that I got to be a part of it, and I thank our fans who are really, I think, the best fans in the world.

Tuchman and Chang are replacing showrunner Bruce Miller for The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, as Miller focuses on developing The Testaments.

What June’s Story Ending Means For The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6

She’s Determined To Finish What She Started

Ever since she saved dozens of children from Gilead at the end of season 3, June has been a symbol of hope and rebellion for many of her fellow handmaids. This grows even more apparent by the end of The Handmaid’s Tale season 5, when she boards a train away from Toronto, Canada, only to find Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) is also there. The season 6 trailer signals she’ll be going back to Gilead in order to exact revenge against them, throwing away her relative safety in Canada because she refuses to stop fighting back.

RelatedThe Handmaid’s Tale is a bleak, tragic TV show by definition, but some episodes are even more horrifying and heartbreaking than others.

Based on Tuchman and Chang’s statement, whatever happens to June in the final episodes will be fitting for her character, giving her an appropriate ending after all she’s been through. This means she’s probably not going to show up in The Testaments‘ story, whatever happens in the forthcoming episodes giving her a definitive ending. While this doesn’t mean her fate will be negative, it does mean her fight with Gilead will probably come to a close, despite the country still existing by the time the next series begins.

Our Take On June’s Story Ending With The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6

Will The Show’s Final Episodes Provide A Fitting Conclusion?

With June continuing her war against Gilead in the show’s final episodes, her fate is currently unclear, especially with all the danger she now faces. Given what the showrunners say, it seems like The Handmaid’s Tale will provide her with a fitting conclusion, albeit a worrisome one given her unending determination to fight the whole country. Depending on how the show leads into The Testaments, her ending could be a passing of the torch, laying the groundwork for those who will come after.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 begins on Tuesday, April 8 on Hulu.
