Warning: This page contains spoilers for the April 21, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The Western Hemisphere) for Monday, April 21, 2025 (Season 41, Game 161):

This country has 2 capitals, is bounded by 5 other countries & has 37 official languages

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Maja Vlajnic, a senior data & policy specialist from Fredericksburg, Virginia

Bob Callen, a retired librarian from Lexington, Kentucky

Liam Starnes, an undergraduate student from Barrington, Illinois (1-day total: $32,401)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

As we enter a new week of Jeopardy! play, UChicago undergrad Liam Starnes returns to defend his title after picking up $32,401 on Friday. Assuming the postseason stays the same as 2025, though, Liam will still need another victory in order to have much of a chance of postseason play at the start of 2026. It seemed to me as if Liam’s buzzer timing was inconsistent in his opening game, though—there were stretches where he was very strong, and there were times where he wasn’t heard from at all. If he can become more consistent, we might see a longer run from Liam. However, we do have two challengers today in Bob Callen and Maja Vlajnic, both of whom I’m sure would love to become the new champion.

Bolivia, located in South America with two capitals—Sucre and La Paz—borders Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, and Peru, which its 37 official languages include Spanish, Quechua, and numerous other indigenous languages.

To me, this seemed to be a relatively straightforward clue, especially after remembering that the category was “The Western Hemisphere”.

Liam once had a Jeopardy!-themed birthday party.

The Daily Double came out very late, but Liam made the minimum wager on it. Probably a good thing, though, as he had zero idea on the clue. Maja continued to lead after 30 clues.

Maja 10 correct 0 incorrect Bob 8 correct 0 incorrect

Liam 8 correct 2 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Double Jeopardy! Round:

Liam found DD2 almost immediately and doubled up through it. Bob found DD3 midway through the round, betting just $1,200 on a $1,600 clue. However, Bob played well enough in the round to lead going into Final in spite of a late charge by Liam. All three players were north of $10,000 going into Final.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Bob 20 correct 0 incorrect Liam 16 correct 4 incorrect Maja 14 correct 1 incorrect

Total number of unplayed clues this season: 30 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Maja $10,200

Liam and Maja were correct in Final, but Bob wasn’t. That makes Liam a 2-day champion! He’ll go for win #3 tomorrow.

Tonight’s results:

Maja $10,200 + $10,100 = $20,300 (What is Brazil Bolivia?)

Liam $12,790 + $7,611 = $20,401 (What is Bolivia?) (2-day total: $52,802)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • One thing that I am impressed with in general is Liam’s strategy, knowing enough to min-max on the Daily Doubles.
  • When it comes to Final Jeopardy betting, if Maja wanted to force Liam do to the math right, the bet has to be all in; holding back $100 doesn’t defend against the most common math errors.
  • Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Bob $15,200 Liam $12,790 Maja $10,200)

Liam: Standard cover bet over Maja is $7,611. (Actual bet: $7,611)

Bob: Standard cover bet over Liam is $10,381. (Actual bet: $10,381)

Maja: Your best chance of winning comes with a bet between $5,001 (passing Bob’s pre-Final score in this case by $1) and $5,020 (saving enough to win on a Triple Stumper.) (Actual bet: $10,100)
