Game 3 of the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens’ first-round series got intense at the end of the second period. So intense, in fact, Tom Wilson tried to fight Josh Anderson on the Capitals bench while linesman Kyle Flemington held on for dear life.
The fracas broke out after Josh Anderson bumped Lars Eller after the buzzer sounded, ending the second period. Both teams stared each other down and yelled back and forth at center ice. Canadiens enforcer Arber Xhekaj tied up Wilson before Anderson skated over and engaged the Capitals’ assistant captain.
As the two scrapped onto the bench, Wilson dropped the gloves as he was shoved into the glass dividing the two benches. Wilson got several punches in before falling onto the floor and being separated by Flemington — a herculean effort from the official to keep things from further spiraling out of control.
Wilson, ever so sarcastic, made sure to taunt the Canadiens at the end of the play, doing a crying face at the Habs as they yelled at him.
Wilson and Anderson were given matching minors for roughing and 10-minute misconducts, while Xhekaj and Eller were given matching minors for roughing. Xhekaj and Wilson exchanged angry words earlier in the night during pregame warmups.
Eller was steamed when asked about the melee during the second intermission by Monumental Sports Network’s Al Koken.
“It’s a lot of emotions, both sides,” Eller said. “I think we’re playing with a lot of physicality, whistle to whistle, there’s some bull[bleep] being started after the whistle, some dirty [bleep], so we’ll let the [bleep]ing refs sort it out. We’ll try to get back to our game here in the third. Play with pace, keep our shifts shorter and get back to our game.”
This actually isn’t the first time Wilson has gotten physical on the bench. During a Capitals-Penguins brawl in 2016, he and Michael Latta got in a fight with a Penguins player off the ice.
