  • 00:00Bloomberg’s Anne Marie Hordern has been traveling with the president this past week and she joins us now from Washington. And I believe it was also on Air Force One that he said, you know, I was elected on this. This was one of the biggest reasons I got elected, of course, talking about eliminating trade deficits. And Anne-Marie, it’s clear that he views this as his mandate and that what’s happening in Wall Street right now is just collateral damage. Yeah, the president is certainly digging in when it comes to his trade policy and doesn’t want to relent. What was very clear is when he was talking about China, he said, I’m willing to make a deal with China, but they have to solve the surplus. We have a tremendous deficit problem with China and also talk about the deficit problem the United States has with the European Union. That seems to be a line in the sand, a red line for this administration. At the same time, Kevin Hassett, his National Economic Council director, was on talking to reporters again earlier this morning, making similar comments he made over the weekend. The fact that more than 50 countries have called the White House are reaching out to the administration to try to get to a deal, which leaves us with this morning this question we have on whether or not this is a pure negotiation or are these the new rules of the road rules of trade, complete global realignment? I did try to ask the president that yesterday on Air Force One. That was a question he did not want to answer.
