UNC basketball loses starting point guard to transfer portal

The North Carolina Tar Heels will be searching for a new point guard next season. With the transfer portal open, the Tar Heels have lost their first player to the portal as point guard Elliot Cadeau decided to enter.

Cadeau made the decision days after the Tar Heels’ loss to the Ole Miss Rebels and after exit meetings with Hubert Davis and the staff. He has now opted to go in a new direction after two seasons with the Tar Heels.

Cadeau entered the portal on Tuesday with a “do not contact” tag.

The point guard committed to North Carolina in December of 2022 as part of the 2024 recruiting class but he reclassified to 2023 and joined the team early.

In two seasons with the program, Cadeau averaged 8.3 points, 5.1 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game in 74 games, making 68 starts. That included a 2024-25 season in which he averaged 9.4 points and 6.2 assists per game.

With Cadeau gone, North Carolina now has to find a new point guard. It’s expected that Seth Trimble will return for his final season but finding a veteran or two in the transfer portal would be a smart idea for Davis and his staff.
