Van de Ven decision ‘to get Postecoglou sacked’ – Tottenham XI v Southampton

Sun 6 April 2025 12:48, UK

Ange Postecoglou might have sealed his own fate after what he decided to do with Micky van de Ven for Tottenham against Southampton.

Postecoglou is at serious risk of being sacked by Daniel Levy.

Therefore, the Australian cannot afford many more defeats, especially not against bottom-of-the-table Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 6 April.

However, the decision he made on van de Ven could cost Tottenham the match against the Saints, which could ultimately end up in Postecoglou being sacked.

Ahead of kick-off, it emerged that Postecoglou could leave van de Ven, James Maddison and Son Heung-min on the bench against Southampton [Evening Standard].

While Maddison and Son do keep their places, van de Ven has been left out, with Ben Davies coming in for the Dutchman, while Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson replace Destiny Udogie and Wilson Odobert in the only other changes from the 1-0 Premier League defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday (3 April).

Although van de Ven wasn’t at his best in that defeat, as per Sofascore, the centre-back still managed to win 100 per cent of his aerial duels and complete 91 per cent of his passes while also making four clearances and two tackles.

Therefore, while it is understandable that Postecoglou might want to rest the 23-year-old after his horrendous injury record this season, leaving him on the bench against Southampton could prove costly.

This current Southampton side are statistically one of the worst teams in Premier League history.

Therefore, anything less than three points on Sunday is simply unacceptable. The last thing Spurs need ahead of their crunch UEFA Europa League clash with Eintracht Frankfurt at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday (10 April) is an embarrassing defeat.

As a result, victory is a must for Postecoglou and his players.
