What Guard Mekhi Becton Brings to the Chargers Offense

The Bolts have added some beef up front.

The Chargers on Friday announced they have signed Mekhi Becton in free agency, a move that adds a mammoth guard in the trenches to help protect Justin Herbert.

Becton is coming off a Super Bowl title with Philadelphia, a place where he turned in the best season of his young career in 2024.

A 2020 first-round pick of the Jets, Becton began his career as a tackle before moving to right guard last season with the Eagles.

He thrived at a new spot, posting an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 75.2 in the regular season, good for 16th among guards with at least 500 snaps.

Becton was effective as a run blocker, too, posting a PFF grade of 74.7, which was the 14th-best mark among all guards with 500-plus snaps.

The addition of Becton means the Chargers could potentially have an imposing duo on the right side of their offensive line.

Becton is listed at 6-foot-7 and 363 pounds. Now imagine him potentially slotting in at right guard next to Joe Alt, who is 6-8 and 322 pounds.

That would be a trembling sight to see for opposing defensive fronts.

Of course, time will tell where Becton slots into the Chargers along the offensive line.

We know that Alt and Rashawn Slater have the tackle spots nailed down.

But the interior of the offensive line could be shuffled around a bit from last season.

Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz said at the 2025 NFL Combine that Zion Johnson, who played left and right guard the past three seasons, has been getting some work at center.

The Bolts also brought back Bradley Bozeman in free agency. He was the Chargers starting center for all of 2024 but also has experience playing guard.

And Trey Pipkins III, the Chargers primary starter at right guard in 2024, is still under contract for this upcoming season, as is versatile lineman Jamaree Salyer.

As of now, the Chargers have plenty of options with how they want to configure their offensive line, but they likely don’t add Becton if they don’t envision him being a part of the starting five.

No matter how it shakes out, Becton’s arrival signals the constant commitment from Hortiz and Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh to build their team from the inside out.

Hortiz’s first draft pick as Chargers GM was Alt, who shined as a rookie right away. Slater is an All-Pro who takes protecting Herbert’s blindside personally.

Becton is the latest piece to the puzzle, and should bring a mindset and play style that fits in perfectly in Los Angeles.
