Fans of “Grand Theft Auto” can expect to play the latest, long-anticipated installment of one of the video game world’s most popular series later this year, representatives of the gaming company said this week.
Rockstar Games listed a fall 2025 release for “Grand Theft Auto VI” in announcing its most recent earnings report, according to the video game news site IGN. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two, told the publication that while he did not want to jinx anything, he and fellow company officials “feel really good about” the projection.
The GTA 6 website describes the game as “the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.” Gameplay takes place in the fictional state of Leonida, apparently based on Florida and featuring attractions like Vice Beach and Vice City.
GTA VI will be playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Its release will mark the first main game in the series since “Grand Theft Auto V” in 2013.
Zelnick’s announcement confirms the previously announced release time period for GTA VI. However, many in the gaming community had grown anxious with previous delays and a lack of news in the decade-plus since the GTA V release.

The original “Grand Theft Auto” came out in 1997 for PlayStation and Microsoft computer operating systems. In total, GTA features seven main games and 17 installments overall. The last game, in 2021, was a remastered trilogy of three previously released games in the series: “GTA III,” “Vice City” and “San Andreas.”
Gaming fans made their excitement for GTA 6 evident with the release of the game’s first trailer on YouTube in December 2023. The 90-second clip was viewed more than 93 million times in the first 24 hours, setting records for a trailer launch and any non-music video, according to Forbes.
