Muslim communities in Michigan are preparing to celebrate Eid al-Fitr as Ramadan 2025 nears its end.

Known as the festival of breaking the fast, the celebration comes at the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, according to Human Appeal USA.

“Eid al-Fitr is a time of forgiveness and making amends, where families can come together and grudges are laid to rest. It’s a joyful and peaceful festival, celebrated annually by more than 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide,” Human Appeal USA‘s website says.

When does Ramadan 2025 end?

Ramadan began at sundown on Feb. 28, and ends at sundown on March 30, according to the Islamic Society of North America. The monthlong fast concludes with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, meaning “the Festival of Breaking the Fast.”

When is Eid al-Fitr 2025?

Eid al-Fitr is set to begin March 30 or March 31, depending on the moon sighting, Islamic Relief UK says.

The beginning of each Islamic month and the dates of Muslim holidays are determined by moon sightings, timeanddate.com said. A new month begins when the crescent moon is spotted in the evening sky after the new moon phase. But the rules of what constitutes a valid sighting vary. So, some communities may celebrate two days, sometimes even three days, before or after other communities.

What is Ramadan?

Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, is a holy month focused on prayer and spirituality, fasting and charity, per Islamic Networks Group. The month’s significance stems from the belief that the Quran was revealed to the Islamic prophet Muhammad during the month of Ramadan, Muslim Aid said.

“Ramadan is a month of intense spiritual rejuvenation with a heightened focus on devotion, during which Muslims spend extra time reading the Qur’an and performing special prayers,” Islamic Networks Group’s website says.

How is Eid al-Fitr celebrated?

Eid al-Fitr celebrations typically include charity, morning prayers at mosques, followed by gatherings among family and friends and shared meals, Human Appeal USA said. Muslims often dress up for the holiday and children may receive gifts.
