Who is Cardinal Dolan? Can he be first American pope?

Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of New York, is one of several U.S. cardinals eligible to vote in the 2025 papal conclave following the death of Pope Francis.

Known for his charisma, media savvy, and conservative theology, Dolan is one of the most recognizable Catholic figures in the United States.

But could he — or any American — actually be pope?

Who is Cardinal Dolan?

Appointed archbishop in 2009 and made a cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012, Dolan is often seen in national media defending the Catholic Church’s positions on moral and social issues.

He served as president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and is known for standing firm on doctrine.

Dolan, though, is not considered a leading contender for pope.

Can an American be pope?

Any baptized Catholic male is eligible to be elected pope, though in modern times, only cardinals are seriously considered.

There has never been an American pope, with the Catholic Church largely opting for popes from non superpower countries.

The American Catholic Church is one of the biggest and richest in the world and has eight cardinals — Dolan included —  expected to take place in the 2025 conclave.

That means Dolan will have considerable influence on deciding the next pope.
