The 1923 Season 2 finale is almost here, and the upcoming two-hour episode promises an epic and dramatic ending to the Yellowstone prequel. Will there be a Season 3, or is this the end of the road for the series led by Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford?
Paramount+ announced in March that 1923 Season 2 would be shorter than Season 1 and consist of just seven episodes. The good news is that finale will run for two hours, nearly double the usual length, giving the show extra time to wrap up its story.
The finale picks up after last week’s shocking episode, “The Mountain Teeth of Monsters,” which featured seven deaths, including a Dutton, two villains, and four other devastating losses.
ForbesWhat Time Is The ‘1923’ Season 2 Finale? When To Watch The Epic Two-Hour EpisodeBy Monica MercuriSpencer Dutton is finally nearing his return to Montana, though not without plenty of setbacks. Whether he’ll actually make it to the ranch remains ucertain, as Banner Creighton’s men will be waiting at the station, ready to put a bullet in him the moment he steps off the train. Meanwhile, Alexandra’s life is on the line as she finds herself alone and stranded in the freezing wilderness on her journey to Montana.
“Jacob [Harrison Ford] and his crew eagerly await Spencer’s return at the train station; Teonna [Aminah Nieves] has a fateful run-in; Alexandra braves the cold,” the logline for the finale reads.
Hopefully, Episode 7 finally brings the long-awaited reunion between Spencer and Alexandra. But don’t expect a peaceful ending. There will likely be plenty of bloodshed as the Duttons fight to save their ranch from wealthy mining tycoon Donald Whitfield, who’s determined to turn their land into a winter resort for outsiders.

Paramount+ has not confirmed whether or not there will be a third season of 1923. However, creator Taylor Sheridan previously said in 2022 that Season 2 will be the final season to conclude the Yellowstone prequel.
“I’m the one that made the call to the network, which is probably the greatest call they ever got,” he told Deadline at the time. “Hey, I need to make more episodes to finish this story. I need to do this in two blocks. An eight episode block and a second eight episode block to wrap this up. I can’t wrap it up in two episodes and do the story justice. For them, it is great because they get more content. For me, I get more runway.”
Given the massive success and high viewership numbers of Season 2, there’s still a possibility the series could continue. The Season 2 finale drew 17 million global views (up 41 percent from Season 1), while the season overall tracked 56 percent ahead in streaming numbers compared to its predecessor, according to Paramount Global.

It’s worth noting that another Yellowstone prequel, 1944, is in the works and will likely continue the Dutton family story just a few years later. Sheridan is also developing the upcoming Beth and Rip spinoff, which is officially moving forward following Yellowstone’s conclusion in December 2024.
While Ford and Mirren have not spoken publicly about the possibility of a third season, Brandon Sklenar (Spencer Dutton) told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2023 that the show will likely end with Season 2.
“No, no, it’s bookend,” he said at the time. “It’s still limited, but I think of it as one piece — there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude.”
Stay tuned for updates on the future of the series.
