Wordle 1,381 3/6*

⬜⬜🟨⬜⬜ AVYZE

⬜🟨🟩⬜🟩 STORY

🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩 BOOTY

Every once in a while, Wordle presents me with a word that stumps the internet.

I came across AVYZE while browsing through the database of valid guesses, but I have not been able to track down a definition. It’s not listed in the Oxford English Dictionary, nor Webster’s nor Collins (or any other dictionary I have tried). Most of the Google results seem to be discussing whether or not it’s a valid Scrabble word (with divided verdicts) but no one seems to know what it means.

If I had to speculate, I would presume it’s an archaic spelling of “avise” (which is itself an alternate form of “advise”) but the OED usually lists those. And all of this begs the larger question:

What’s it doing in Wordle?

Well, today it gave me half a “Y”; that’s what it did. And then STORY left me with only one possible word, so… yay?

Mind you, it took me a while to spot BOOTY, and I wrestled with it before typing it in. I’m still not sure whether I’m supposed to hoard it or shake it, but the only other possible word I could come up with was FOOTY (which felt wrong on so many levels).

If anyone out there has any further insights into AVYZE, well… please AVYZE!

Happy Monday, everyone.
